Paper World - Imaginary World Where Paper Lives, 2006

Paper World is an installation produced in relation to my doctoral research ³Paper-ness in Finnish Textile Art², performed at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The research is a dialogue between theoretical research and art practice. The major research question is what relationship between materials and artistic expressions in textile art is.

Paper World is the theme of my artistic work subsequent to the series entitled Seeing Paper (2005), which I explore how expression is constructed in the making and in the viewing of an artwork in relation to material used in the work. The intention of creating Paper World is to argue the existence of a material in the world as the expression of the artist. In brief, my subjective idea is that I, as an artist, give life to a material by manipulating it into an artwork. And when the material exists in the artwork, it could mean that it lives its life in the world as a metaphorical or an imaginary being.

The installation consists of artworks imitating ordinary household things surrounding us in everyday lives; the details of the works can be seen in the printed material. The space to exhibit this installation is important, I have expected to show it in a real house where human beings live or a supposed house. Being in the house represents being alive in the world. However, with some restrictions, the choice of a supposed house seems more feasible. The installation will therefore be presented in a gallery house, Galleris Gjutars, in Vantaa in January 2007, as the second exhibition related to my doctoral dissertation.

In addition, Paper World was exhibited in Kyoto, in June 2006, with an invitation from Sfera Building.
